Restrictions on tailgate opening

This bike rack allows the tailgate to be opened on almost all vehicles and is ideal for almost all vehicle categories, e.g. VW Touran, Opel Zafira and of course all SUVs, MPVs, station wagons, 5-doors, sedans, etc. This means that the tailgate can still be opened when the bike rack is folded down and loaded (!).

Exceptions:

1. Tailgate opening with this carrier is not possible for vehicles in the VW Transporter T4, T5, Caddy and Mercedes V-Class categories: These vehicles have an (almost) completely vertical, very large tailgate and a coupling whose ball is (almost) at loading sill level. Standard folding mechanisms are not sufficient for these vehicles and vehicles with a similar configuration. Therefore, only the following carriers would be suitable for these vehicles: ATERA 022601 STRADA DL 3 and ATERA 022701 EVO 3 (only these, not the versions for 2 bikes!), EUFAB PREMIUM II PLUS (2 bikes), EUFAB PROBC 2+ (2 wheels, expandable to 3) THULE 929 EuroClassic G6 and THULE 939 VeloSpace XT (each 3 bikes, expandable to 4), UEBLER P22 S (2 wheels, expandable to 3), i21 with 90° folding (2 bikes), i21 Z (2 wheels) and i41 S (4 wheels), ATERA Genio pro 022780 (2 bikes, expandable to 3) and bike carriers from the UEBLER H series. The same applies to pick-ups whose rear tail lift can be folded back: only with the carriers mentioned in this paragraph will this definitely not hit the bike rack.

2. In the Opel Zafira B there are vehicles with certain couplings that only allow the supports listed under 1. These cases are rare, the exact configuration (coupling type) is not known. In the Mercedes V-Class, in very rare cases the inclination of the coupling can be changed slightly downwards, which is not a major effort. The same is true for the VW Touran in extremely rare cases. Overall, there are always "outliers" in large vehicles with a low tailgate, with an estimated 1 in 10,000 vehicles having an unfavorable combination of manufacturing tolerances (rear of the vehicle and installation of the trailer coupling) in conjunction with the coupling type (design, manufacturer), which can lead to the tailgate not opening like in almost all other vehicles of the same type. The supports listed under 1. should therefore usually allow the tailgate to open. However, only the carriers UEBLER P22 S (2 wheels, expandable to 3) and i21 with 90° folding (2 wheels), i21 Z (2 wheels) and i41 S (4 wheels), ATERA Genio pro 022780 (2 wheels, expandable to 3) can be 100% safe.

3. VW T6: Since July 2017, there has been increasing feedback from customers that on newly registered VW T6s with a removable trailer hitch, no bike rack for the trailer hitch allows the tailgate to be opened. We must therefore currently assume that something has been changed in the vehicle/hitch. With the VW T6, you must therefore expect that the tailgate cannot be opened when the bike rack is loaded, even with the racks mentioned under 1. - except for the UEBLER racks that fold down at a 90° angle: UEBLER P22 S (2 bikes, expandable to 3), i21 with 90° folding (2 wheels), i21 Z with 90° folding (2 wheels) and i41 S (4 wheels), ATERA Genio pro 022780 (2 bikes, expandable to 3) and the UEBLER H-series bike rack.

4. Vehicles with rear doors: For vehicles with 2 rear doors, i.e. hinged doors that fold away to the side, only the bicycle carrier "LAS SD260" is suitable.
