As a point of contact with the bike, the handlebars are essential for good performance, that is clear. But there are some terms that come to mind when choosing a new handlebar that are not entirely clear. So that you know, we explain everything about sweep, rise and much more!
The first thing that is usually considered is the width, because the downhill rider tends to have very wide handlebars of around 800mm, while the cross country rider feels more comfortable with around 700mm. The sweep also varies depending on the category and indicates how much the handlebars are curved. Upsweep is the upward bend, which strengthens an active driving position, and backsweep is the backward curvature, which is intended to make the transition from wrist to forearm as straight as possible.
The rise is the handlebar height, which, like the width, usually depends on the sport you are doing. Material and diameter are often very dependent on taste and depend on each other when it comes to stiffness values. As a rule, carbon handlebars are the lighter and stiffer option, while aluminum passes on fewer vibrations to the rider and has more flex, but is heavier.

HANDLEBARS, STEM, HEADSET - HOW THE COCKPIT AFFECTS THE ENTIRE BODY
The handlebars form the basis for the cockpit. On most mountain bikes you will always find the same basic handlebar shape: wide and straight, the so-called “flatbar”. This may look cool and increase control in various special sporting disciplines, but for many drivers it also causes their wrists to bend. The result is pinched nerves, poor blood circulation, high pressure on the ball of the hand and the feeling of your hands falling asleep. A different handlebar shape can help here. The aim is to bring the entire cockpit, hands, wrists, arms and shoulders into a neutral position to minimize fatigue and increase comfort.

HANDLEBAR - FIND THE RIGHT MEASURE
In addition to the width of the handlebars, other factors are important. Bending the handlebars a few degrees backwards (“backsweep”) can bring your wrists into a neutral position and prevent your fingers from falling asleep. The ideal height of the handlebar unit can also be adjusted. Of course, this initially depends on whether you ride through the city in an upright position, or whether you ride your bike off-road or on the road. But the general rule is: A slight rise in the handlebars often has a positive effect on the posture of the spine and the activity of the abdominal and back muscles.
