What is WaveCel?:
WaveCel is a compressible cell structure on the inside of the helmet. It works like a crumple zone that absorbs the impact energy in the event of a fall and protects the head from hard blows.
It is a compressible cell material that offers incredibly effective protection against concussions in typical cycling accidents. The material structure reacts in three phases to an impact to absorb the energy before it reaches the head. A special feature is that the WaveCel material in the helmet absorbs the rotational forces, so that they are transferred to the skull to a much lesser extent or not at all. Conventional helmets with EPS foam have so far not been able to permanently prevent this force from being absorbed at the moment of impact, which significantly increases the risk of concussions.
Exclusive to Bontrager helmets, this material is the brainchild of a biomechanical engineer and an orthopedic surgeon dedicated to solving the problem of traumatic brain injuries in active individuals. WaveCel is the first advanced helmet technology ever to receive funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
