WaveCel – Revolutionary helmet technology

“If you have a brain, you protect it” – since sporty cyclists in particular have understood exactly this in recent years, there is plenty of room for innovation.

Bontrager presents four new helmet models with revolutionary WaveCel technology

Blaze WaveCel – mountain bike helmet

Charge WaveCel – City and Urban Helmet

Specter WaveCel – racing bike or marathon/cross country helmet

XXX WaveCel – highly sporty racing bike helmet.

What does a bicycle helmet have to do and how do innovative helmets differ from conventional ones?

In the worst case scenario, such as a fall or accident, a helmet should prevent head injuries or at least reduce their severity. For a long time this was only guaranteed by a shock-absorbing outer shell with appropriate padding, until a few years ago the Mips system raised the safety standard to a new level. The Mips system is a movable inner shell that can move against the outer shell in the event of a fall or accident, thus reducing the shear forces acting on the head. The proven hard outer shell ensures shock absorption.

Since most falls on a bike don't happen like the proverbial “hit on the head with a hammer”. Forces also strike the head at an angle, or the head and body rotate during an impact. So it's unpredictable what kind of shock or impact the helmet has to mitigate. For this reason, Bontrager uses technology that is already established in NFL sports in the USA. Doctors, scientists and engineers developed WaveCel, a cellular material that is attached to the inside of the helmet. It is compressible, therefore shock-absorbing and able to reduce rotational movements that can cause head injuries.

Independently verified safety

Both Trek and Virginia Tech, an independent helmet testing facility, have conducted studies and attest that WaveCel helmets are extremely safe. You can view the studies at trekbikes.com/wavecel or https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html .

Anyone who is concerned that honeycomb technology could come at the expense of ventilation and become uncomfortable, especially in extreme temperatures or weather conditions, can breathe a sigh of relief.

The air flow through the helmet is changed, the air flow is channeled and thus offers better ventilation than conventional EPS foam. Since, according to the manufacturer, less insulating foam material is used than in conventional helmets, heat can escape better. But sweat doesn't affect the material either. Overall, the WaveCel helmet can be handled just like any other helmet.
