Focus PROJECT Y 2018 – The future of racing bikes

Since the first conception of the racing bike, people have strived for excellence. It combines the age-old desire for speed with technological progress for more sporty performance on the roads. New paths are being taken and the “focus” is placed on this.

When the bike is viewed separately from the rider's performance, potential is lost. When it comes to peak performance, it is important that driver and machine function as one. Maximum performance should be provided at all times and on each leg, so an electric motor is integrated to provide support at critical moments. However, support is only provided when you really need it.

Otherwise, the PROJECT Y offers the same handling as a racing bike. There is no pedal resistance! At less than 12kg the bike is really light and fast! Where weight would normally become a problem (e.g. uphill), the motor switches on and supports you with an additional 400 watts of power. At 25 km/h the help feels natural and you can get the most out of the ride. The future of racing bikes offers maximum performance in every situation.

PROJECT Y is the platform of the future. A playground for innovation and a forum where dreams are the topic of conversation. Here Focus presents what is possible. These are designs and ideas that were conceived by passionate cyclists - our engineers and product managers. They offer approaches without a strict definition. The Y in PROJECT Y stands for: “ Why does current technology only work in one direction?” Focus examines the developments in our industry, building new paths when the cycling industry is already on well-established ones Routes follow. They want to inspire, provide feedback and stimulate discussions. The right arm of the Y symbolizes the new paths that are being taken.

The actual implementation of the project plays a crucial role. In the past we have seen a wealth of ideas about e-bikes - both futuristic utopias and viable project sketches. Unfortunately, concepts without practical implementation cannot be included in the evaluation. Drawings are easier to visualize, a ready-to-ride model is the only way to really evaluate an e-bike .

For these reasons, the Focus PROJECT Y 2018 already looks like a finished bike, although it is actually still in the prototype phase. At least a test drive shows the errors and problems that of course cannot be seen in drawings. Despite everything, this is an ongoing project and Focus invites you to get involved and give feedback about it. The PROJECT Y concepts may not necessarily make it to mass production, but could generate strong interest.

We are excited to see where the journey takes us and look forward to the latest innovation.
